Brex Engineering Jobs: How to Apply in 2026 (Roles, Real Comp, and the AI-Assisted Loop)
We built Standout because the application-driven job search is broken, and the Brex engineering search is a clean example of why. Every page ranking for this query is describing a company that stopped existing in April.
Brex is an AI-native corporate card and spend platform, acquired by Capital One for $5.15 billion on April 7, 2026. You apply at brex.com/careers, which runs on Greenhouse. The board shows 47 engineering listings, but those collapse to roughly 17 distinct requisitions, and 13 of the 17 are senior or manager roles.

Brex is a Capital One company now, and none of page one says so
Capital One closed its acquisition of Brex on April 7, 2026, and Pedro Franceschi stayed on as CEO (Source: Capital One Newsroom, 2026). That was more than four months before this was written. Not one result ranking for "brex engineering jobs apply" mentions it. Brex's own careers page still opens with "Be the founder of your career."
The numbers that matter to a candidate, in the order they matter. The deal was announced on January 22, 2026 at roughly $5.15 billion: $2.75 billion in cash plus 10.6 million Capital One shares (Source: Payments Dive, 2026). Brex was last valued privately at $12.3 billion in 2021, so the exit landed about 60% below its peak (Source: Payments Dive, 2026). And Capital One will spend nearly $1 billion over three years to integrate Brex, with retention compensation named as part of that spend (Source: American Banker, April 2026).
The hot take: that retention line is the most candidate-relevant number in the entire deal, and nobody has bothered to write it down. A company that has earmarked serious money specifically to keep the people it already employs is a company where the internal bar for hiring someone from outside has gone up, not down. Read the $1 billion as a signal about who Brex is competing with for headcount, and the answer is its own staff.
Two honest limits. The client-count reporting wobbles: Payments Dive put it at about 25,000 companies at announcement, American Banker at about 35,000 at close three months later (Source: American Banker, April 2026). Treat those as a range, not a figure. And neither outlet reported any post-deal hiring or staffing commitment in either direction. Absence of a stated plan is not evidence of cuts, and we are not going to pretend otherwise.
The 47 engineering jobs are about 17 jobs
Aggregators inflate. One remote-jobs aggregator advertises 299 active Brex listings and describes 127 of them as remote-friendly (Source: RemoteLeaf, captured Aug 2026). Brex's own Greenhouse board, the system behind its apply button, shows 294 roles company-wide and 47 tagged engineering (Source: Brex Greenhouse board, Aug 2026). Hold those two remote numbers next to each other for a second. We will come back to them.
Then count them properly, which no page-one result does. Those 47 listings are the same requisitions posted once per office. "Senior Software Engineer, Full Stack" appears in five cities. "Engineering Manager, Travel" and "Engineering Manager, GTM Engineering" appear in four apiece. Deduplicated, it is about 17 distinct engineering roles (Source: Brex Greenhouse board, Aug 2026).
The hot take, and it is the sharpest number on this page: 13 of those 17 are Senior or Engineering Manager. Exactly four are non-senior individual-contributor roles, and here they are in full: AI Engineer (Ecosystem), AI Engineer (Product), Data Scientist II (Applied ML), and Software Engineer, Forward Deployed Agent Builder (Source: Brex Greenhouse board, Aug 2026). If you are a mid-level engineer who just read a headline saying Brex has 299 openings, the honest count of roles aimed at you is four.
Geography narrows it again. Brex posts engineering in San Francisco, New York, Seattle, Vancouver BC and São Paulo, and exactly one engineering requisition on the whole board is fully remote: Senior Application Security Engineer, open in the US and Canada (Source: Brex Greenhouse board, Aug 2026). That is the payoff on the 127 remote-friendly listings the aggregator promised. If you need remote, Brex is one job, not a job search.
This is one snapshot of a live board, taken on one day. Boards move. The ratio is the durable part, not the count.
The loop everyone is prepping for may not be the loop
Here is where the Brex search gets genuinely strange, and where every guide ranking above this one is out of date.
A Brex employee posting on Blind in April 2026 describes an AI-assisted coding round, graded on how well the candidate uses AI assistants to build a production-ready application. Their advice to candidates, verbatim: "relax let the agent do grunt work and talk thru your high level thinking." Asked directly on April 21, 2026 whether LeetCode rounds remain, the same respondent answered: "Nope" (Source: Blind, Brex employee replies, April 2026).
Now the collision. Every interview-prep page ranking for this keyword describes a loop with no AI round in it at all. TechInterview.org was updated on July 12, 2026, three months after that thread, and still lists algorithms and applied fintech coding rounds, still makes no mention of an AI round, and still tells candidates to grind "Ruby / Rails LeetCode if you're rusty" (Source: TechInterview.org, updated July 2026).
| Source | Type of source | Coding format described | AI round? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blind employee report, Apr 2026 | Anonymous employee | AI-assisted build of a production-ready app | Yes, reported to replace LeetCode |
| TechInterview.org, updated Jul 2026 | Prep guide | Algorithms plus applied fintech coding | Not mentioned |
| TechPrep, 2026 | Prep guide | Two 60-min coding rounds, 60-min system design | Not mentioned |
| JobsByCulture, 2026 | Prep guide | 5 rounds, about 21 days end to end | Not mentioned |
| github.com/brexhq/public-interview | Brex, first-party | Debug a small file-reading program, two unit tests | Silent either way |
We are not going to resolve this by picking the more exciting answer. The AI-round evidence is an anonymous post on a discussion board, not a company disclosure, and Brex's own published interview repo says nothing about AI in either direction (Source: brexhq/public-interview). The prep guides are secondary sources writing about a process they do not run.
The hot take: the disagreement is itself the actionable finding, because you cannot prepare for both of those loops with the same three weeks. One rewards algorithmic fluency under time pressure. The other rewards knowing when to stop typing and start directing. Ask the recruiter which one you are walking into, on the screen, before you book a single hour of prep. That question costs you nothing and it will change your prep more than anything else you do.
One round survives in every version of the story, and almost nobody preps it. TechInterview.org describes Brex's craft round as "a 45-minute rabbit hole into one project from your resume," where interviewers probe what it calls the money-and-correctness dimension, asking "what would break?" and "what invariants did you rely on?" rather than architecture trade-offs (Source: TechInterview.org, updated July 2026). That is a fintech company asking a fintech question. Pick the project where you can talk fluently about failure modes, not the one with the prettiest architecture diagram.
Nobody agrees on what language you would actually write
Three sources, three answers.
TechInterview.org is unambiguous: "Brex's core stack is Rails, and you'll write Rails code from day one," with Ruby "strongly preferred for product-engineering roles" (Source: TechInterview.org, updated July 2026). Aggregated prep content elsewhere tells candidates to expect Kotlin, Java, Go or TypeScript. And Brex's own public interview repository, the single first-party artifact in this entire search and one that not one page-one result cites, ships setup instructions for Java, Python and JavaScript, and does not offer Ruby at all (Source: brexhq/public-interview).
The hot take: the only document Brex actually publishes about its own interview contradicts the guide that is most confident about Brex's stack. Treat every "Brex is a Rails shop" claim as an assertion someone made, not a fact you can plan around.
The honest caveat is that the repo carries no visible last-updated date, so it proves what Brex publishes, not necessarily what Brex runs this week. Which routes to the same instruction as the section above: the answer exists, one recruiter email away, and it is worth more than any guide on this topic.
What Brex pays, and why two sources differ by $150K
Levels.fyi puts the US median for a Brex Software Engineer at $385,000, on a range of $223,000 to $720,000+, and publishes a clean ladder (Source: Levels.fyi, Aug 2026).
| Level | Title | Total | Base | Stock/yr |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L1 | Associate Software Engineer | $223K | $155K | $60.9K |
| L2 | Software Engineer | $242K | $170K | $70K |
| L3 | Software Engineer II | $284K | $200K | $82.7K |
| L4 | Senior Software Engineer | $395K | $273K | $122K |
Glassdoor, meanwhile, reports a median total pay of $207,536 for a Brex Software Engineer and $242,120 for a Senior Software Engineer (Source: Glassdoor, via indexed listing data; the page blocks direct fetch). That is roughly a $150,000 gap at the senior level between the two most-cited compensation sources on the internet, which is far past the point where averaging them becomes malpractice.
Do not average them and do not pick the one you like better. The spread has a cause: aggregator medians are self-reported, they rarely disclose how many submissions they rest on, and the Glassdoor figure reads as base-leaning while the Levels.fyi figure is explicitly total compensation. Levels.fyi also confirms L5 and L6 exist while publishing no figures for either, so the top of the ladder is simply dark.
The hot take, and it is specific to this company in this particular year: the stock half of every number above is now a different financial instrument than it was when it was reported. Every pre-April-2026 submission describes private Brex equity in a company that was then independent. Brex is a Capital One subsidiary. No public source states what new hires are granted after the close, so we are not going to tell you, and neither should anyone else. Ask the recruiter on the first call whether an offer is Capital One RSUs, and if so, on what vesting and what refresh. That is a research gap, we are logging it as one, and it happens to be the single most consequential unknown in a Brex offer right now.
Why the apply button is the worst door, and what to do instead
Brex's careers page publishes values, principles, benefits and its investor list. It publishes no interview process, no format, no timeline, no compensation range, no application review procedure and no stated response time (Source: Brex Careers). It leads with "Be the founder of your career" and the claim that over 100 Brex alumni have gone on to launch their own companies, which it says is 4x the industry average (Source: Brex Careers).
Give that its due. It is a real and genuinely unusual pitch, and if your goal is to start a company in five years it is a better argument than most employers can make. It is also a values page, not an information page, and every fact you would need to decide whether to spend three weeks on this process is absent from it.
On the odds, the honest version. Market compilations put the applicant-to-interview conversion rate for online applications at roughly 2–3%, with employers receiving around 250 applications per posting and interviewing four to six people (Source: HiringThing 2026, citing RecruitBPM and ResuTrack). That is a chain of secondary sources, it is a market baseline rather than a Brex number, and it should be used directionally and nowhere near a spreadsheet. We are also not quoting you a referral multiplier, because published figures for that run from 4x to 40x with no consistent primary study behind any of them, and a statistic with a 10x spread is not a statistic.
Brex publishes no applications-per-role, no invite rate and no application-to-offer rate. Treat any specific Brex percentage you find online as invented, because it is.
From the matches we run, the pattern is consistent: the people who land seats at a company with four mid-level openings almost never get there by out-applying everyone else. They get there because someone who already had the hiring manager's attention put their name in front of it.
Standout is not a Brex application channel. We have no backdoor into Brex, no special queue, and anyone who tells you they do is not being straight with you. What Standout does is different in kind. You build one profile, we match you against US tech companies that are hiring right now, and if you say yes, we introduce you directly to the founder.
| Applying at brex.com/careers | Getting matched by Standout | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the work | You, per company, per listing | We do, once, across every company |
| Who you are ranked against | Every inbound applicant to that req | A shortlist built from fit |
| Who reads you first | Greenhouse, then a recruiter | A founder or hiring manager, directly |
| How current the information is | As current as the page you found it on, which may predate the acquisition | Roles we are actively matching for right now |
| Roles open to a mid-level IC | Four, on today's board | Every US tech company we work with |
| Speed | About 21 days of loop, plus queue time before it | First matches within a few hours |
| Cost | Your time, unpriced | Free for candidates |
So, a ruling per person reading this.
Senior engineer or engineering manager, already in SF, New York, Seattle or Vancouver: apply directly, today. Thirteen of the seventeen open requisitions are yours, and you are the profile the retention budget is competing against. Ask about the AI round on the screen.
Mid-level engineer: do not build your search around Brex. Four roles is not a plan. Apply to the one that fits if one fits, then go wide through people rather than forms. See how Standout's matching works.
Anyone who needs fully remote: there is one remote engineering requisition on the entire Brex board. If that is not your specialty, this is not your company this quarter. Spend the time elsewhere.
Anyone weighing an offer: get the equity structure in writing before you get attached. The comp data you researched describes a company that no longer exists in the form it described.
Cold applying is the most common way people find work. It is not the most effective, and it is the default because it asks nothing of you upfront, not because it works. For a fuller picture of where the boards fit, see how Standout compares to job boards.
FAQ
Is Brex still hiring engineers after the Capital One acquisition?
Yes. Brex's Greenhouse board showed 294 open roles company-wide and 47 tagged engineering in August 2026, four months after the deal closed (Source: Brex Greenhouse board, Aug 2026). Neither Capital One nor Brex has published a post-deal hiring plan in either direction, so treat any claim about future headcount as speculation.
Does Brex still do LeetCode interviews?
The sources disagree, which is the real answer. A Brex employee posting on Blind in April 2026 said the LeetCode round is gone, replaced by an AI-assisted coding round (Source: Blind, April 2026). A prep guide updated in July 2026 still describes algorithm rounds and recommends LeetCode practice (Source: TechInterview.org, July 2026). Ask your recruiter which loop you are in before you prepare for either.
How much do engineers make at Brex?
Levels.fyi reports a $385,000 US median with a $223,000 to $720,000+ range, and $395,000 total for an L4 Senior Software Engineer (Source: Levels.fyi, Aug 2026). Glassdoor reports $242,120 for the same senior level (Source: Glassdoor, via indexed listing data). The gap is about $150,000, so use the ladder for shape and get the actual number from the recruiter.
What programming language do Brex engineers use?
Three sources give three answers: Ruby and Rails according to one prep guide, Kotlin, Java, Go or TypeScript according to aggregated prep content, and Java, Python or JavaScript in Brex's own public interview repository, which does not offer Ruby (Source: brexhq/public-interview; TechInterview.org, July 2026). Ask.
What is the best way to get hired at a company like Brex?
Not the apply button. Brex's careers page publishes no process, no timeline and no compensation range (Source: Brex Careers), and market baselines put online applications at a 2–3% interview rate (Source: HiringThing 2026, citing RecruitBPM and ResuTrack). Get in front of a person who can decide, through your network or through a matching service that does the outreach for you.
