How to Spot a Fake Job Posting: The 9 Red Flags That Actually Matter

Fake postings come in two very different flavors

The reason most "how to spot a fake job" advice is useless is that it lumps everything together. The two categories have almost nothing in common except the word "fake."

A ghost job is posted by a real, legitimate company. The pay is real, the logo is real, the careers page is real. What's not real is the intent to hire. The role might be a perpetual "always-on" req to keep a talent pipeline warm, a posting left up after the role was filled, a position frozen by a budget cut that nobody took down, or a listing meant to signal growth to investors. Ghost jobs don't cost you money. They cost you something arguably worse at scale: time, and the slow erosion of believing any of your applications matter.

A scam is a different animal entirely. There's no real company behind it, or someone is impersonating one. The goal is extraction — your bank details, a fake-check laundering scheme, an upfront "fee," or enough personal data to open accounts in your name. These are crimes, and they're growing fast. Reports of job and employment-agency scams to the FTC roughly tripled between 2020 and 2024, and reported losses jumped from about $90 million to $501 million over that span (Source: FTC). In the fourth quarter of 2025 alone, job-opportunity scams drove $150.4 million in reported losses across roughly 25,000 reports, with a median individual loss of $2,000 (Source: FTC).

You handle these two threats with completely different reflexes. Ghost jobs you learn to filter so you stop wasting effort. Scams you learn to detect and exit before they touch your wallet.

How to spot a ghost job

Ghost jobs are common enough that you should assume a meaningful share of what you scroll past isn't fillable. In Greenhouse's 2024 State of Job Hunting report — a survey of 2,500 workers — 18–22% of postings on its platform were classified as ghost jobs in any given quarter, and 70% of its hiring clients posted at least one ghost job in a single quarter of 2024 (Source: Greenhouse). Roughly 73% of U.S. candidates said they'd encountered one. That's not a fringe problem; it's the texture of the modern board.

Here's how to read the signal:

Check how long it's been live, and whether it keeps reappearing. A genuinely open role with a hiring manager waiting on candidates does not sit untouched for two months. A posting that's been up 60+ days, or one that gets taken down and reposted on a loop, is usually a pipeline req or a frozen role nobody closed.

Read for specificity. Real roles have a team, a manager, concrete responsibilities, and a reason the seat exists right now. Ghost jobs read generic on purpose — "we're always looking for great engineers," a job title with no scope, a description that could belong to any company. The vaguer the posting, the lower the odds there's a real opening behind it.

Cross-check the company's own careers page and headcount signals. If a 40-person startup has 25 open listings, most aren't real. If a role is posted on three aggregators but not on the company's own site, treat it as suspect.

Hot take: a wide-open salary band is a tell, not a courtesy. A posting that says "$90k–$240k" isn't being transparent — it usually means nobody has scoped the role tightly enough to fill it. Real reqs have a real level attached.

None of these are dangerous. They're just a filter. The takeaway isn't paranoia — it's to stop measuring your job search in applications submitted, because a third of the listings may not be capable of hiring you no matter how good your résumé is.

How to spot a scam

Scams are rarer than ghost jobs but far more costly, and they have a tighter, more reliable set of tells. The FTC's guidance is blunt, and it's the bar we'd hold any opportunity to.

The contact method is the first filter. Real employers do not recruit you out of nowhere by text, WhatsApp, or Telegram. The FTC's plain-language verdict: assume any job interview conducted only via Telegram is a scam, and treat unexpected job texts as fraud until proven otherwise (Source: FTC). One in three people who reported losing money to a job or business-opportunity scam in 2025 said it started on social media (Source: FTC). If the first touch is a cold DM with a vague pitch and a too-good number, you're already most of the way to a no.

Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to get hired. Training fees, "equipment" you have to buy, a charge to run your own background check, a starter-kit payment — all scams. The rule is absolute: money flows from employer to you, never the reverse (Source: FTC).

The fake-check move is the classic. They send you a check, tell you to deposit it and wire back part of it — for "supplies," for a "client," for anything. The check bounces days later, the money you wired is gone, and you're liable. An honest employer will never send you a check and ask you to send part of it back.

Watch the small signals that betray a fake identity. A recruiter writing from a personal Gmail rather than a company domain. An "offer" extended within a day and no real interview. Spelling and grammar that a real corporate recruiting team wouldn't ship. An interview that stays in text chat and never moves to a voice or video call where you'd see a real person. Any one of these is a yellow flag; two together is a stop.

The mental model: a ghost job wastes your week, but a scam wants something irreversible from you in the next hour. Speed and a money ask are the two features almost every scam shares and almost no real job has.

What to actually do with a suspicious listing

Don't agonize over each posting. Run a fast triage:

  1. 1Verify the company exists independently. Go to the company's real website directly — not a link in the message — and confirm the role is posted there too. Find the recruiter on LinkedIn and check the profile has history, not just a week-old account.
  2. 2Never pay, never cash a check, never share bank or SSN details before a real, verified offer through official channels. There is no legitimate exception to this in early-stage hiring.
  3. 3Keep the contact on official rails. If someone insists on moving you to Telegram or a personal email "to move faster," that insistence is the answer.
  4. 4Report and move on. Scam listings go to reportfraud.ftc.gov and to the platform you found them on. Ghost jobs just get closed and forgotten. Don't let either one take up residence in your head.

The deeper fix is structural. If a third of board listings are ghosts and a growing slice are outright fraud, the channel itself is the problem — not your ability to spot any single bad posting. The candidates who escape this don't get better at vetting listings. They stop relying on listings.
