Modal Engineering Jobs: How to Apply in 2026 (And What All 19 Open Reqs Actually Pay)
Modal is a serverless AI infrastructure company that raised $355M at a $4.65B valuation in May 2026. Its board lists 19 open engineering roles. Fifteen are New York, four are Stockholm, none is San Francisco, and none is remote. Fourteen publish exact salary bands that no page ranking for this query shows you.

Modal publishes the salary bands. Nothing ranking for this search shows them.
We read hiring boards at the API level rather than the page level, because that is what Standout's matching engine runs against. Modal is the cleanest example this month of how much that changes the picture. Its careers page routes to an Ashby board that is rendered client-side, so a crawler fetching it gets an empty document. That single technical detail is why every aggregator quotes a different number: Built In says 21 open roles, Scoutify says 32, and the board's own public posting API returns 31 (Source: Modal Ashby posting API).
Behind that empty document sits the thing candidates spend evenings hunting for. New York City's pay transparency law requires a posted band, and 14 of Modal's 15 New York engineering reqs carry one. Here is the entire set.
| Role | Track | Posted base band | Location |
|---|---|---|---|
| Systems Engineering Manager | Management | $275K to $330K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Systems | MTS | $220K to $300K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Platform Engineering | MTS | $220K to $300K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, ML Performance | MTS | $200K to $350K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Python SDK | MTS | $150K to $350K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Research (Inference) | MTS | $150K to $350K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Research (Post-Training) | MTS | $150K to $350K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Product (Backend) | MTS | $150K to $300K | New York |
| Member of Technical Staff, Product (Growth) | MTS | $150K to $300K | New York |
| Forward Deployed Engineer, ML | FDE | $180K to $250K | New York |
| Forward Deployed Engineer, Systems | FDE | $180K to $240K | New York |
| Infrastructure Security Engineer | Security | $150K to $270K | New York |
| Detection and Response Engineer | Security | $150K to $270K | New York |
| Customer Engineer | Customer | $150K to $220K | New York |
| ML Research Intern | Intern | $15K per month | New York |
Stockholm posts separately and less completely: Systems Engineering Manager at $175K to $250K, Member of Technical Staff Systems at $140K to $200K, and the two Stockholm Forward Deployed reqs carry no band at all. Most reqs append "Offers Equity" to the band. The Stockholm manager req, the Detection and Response req and the intern req do not (Source: Modal Ashby posting API).
Now the part that should bother you. Levels.fyi is where most candidates go to price a company, and its Modal Labs page has zero salary submissions, no level breakdown and no equity detail. It lists the company at 5 employees with $0 to $1M estimated revenue (Source: Levels.fyi). Modal has raised over $466M and reported roughly $300M in annual revenue as of May 2026 (Source: Modal, SiliconANGLE).
One tracking site does publish a range for Modal, and it quotes $150K to $270K (Source: Scoutify). Nine of the 14 banded New York reqs have ceilings above that number, and four of them top out at $350K. The one page that tries understates the ceiling by $80K.
The hot take: every third-party comp page for this company is guessing, and the authoritative number is printed on the req itself. Stop reading salary aggregators for Modal. Open the posting, read the band, and treat any figure you find elsewhere as unsourced until it matches.
"Member of Technical Staff" is not a level, and the band width says so
Member of Technical Staff is the title on nine of Modal's 19 open engineering reqs (Source: Modal Ashby posting API). It covers systems, platform engineering, ML performance, the Python SDK, two research reqs and two product reqs. It maps to no conventional ladder, and the posted bands make that explicit rather than hiding it.
Python SDK, Research Inference and Research Post-Training all post $150K to $350K. That is a $200K spread on one title. Product Backend and Product Growth post $150K to $300K. Systems and Platform Engineering start higher, at $220K to $300K, which is the only real signal the title carries: those two reqs will not consider the bottom of the range that the SDK and research reqs will.
A $200K band is not sloppiness. It is a company telling you, in public, that it is not hiring a level. It is deciding what you are after it meets you.
That cuts in two directions and the honest version says both. For anyone who arrives with someone inside the company already arguing for where they land, a wide band is upside, because the ceiling is real and it is $350K. For anyone arriving as an anonymous application in a queue, the same band is a liability, because the default anchor in that conversation is the number at the bottom, and nothing in a cold application pushes against it.
The hot take: the width of that band is the most useful thing on the entire req, and almost nobody reads it as information. Before you apply, decide which end of a $200K spread you intend to land on, and then be honest about whether anything in your application is doing that work for you.
Modal engineering is a New York job. The San Francisco office is a decoy.
If you are a Bay Area engineer, this is a relocation decision wearing the costume of a job application, and you should find that out now rather than after a take-home.
Modal has three offices, in New York, Stockholm and San Francisco (Source: Modal), which is why nearly every reader assumes an AI infrastructure company of this profile is a Bay Area employer. Across all 31 open roles the split is New York 22, San Francisco 5, Stockholm 4. Every one of those five San Francisco reqs is GTM or G&A: Developer Relations Engineer, Solutions Architect, Community Manager, Revenue Operations, and a Talent Partner (Source: Modal Ashby posting API). Zero engineering.
All 19 engineering reqs are listed OnSite. None is remote. Modal's registered business address with the SEC is New York, NY (Source: SEC EDGAR).
Four of the 19 are Stockholm, which puts them outside the United States and therefore outside what Standout can do for anyone reading this. We place in the US only. Those four reqs are a direct application or nothing.
The 19 reqs collapse into three tracks
Modal's engineering board has no sub-teams. All 19 reqs sit on a single team value, so title and location are the only structure a candidate can read off it (Source: Modal Ashby posting API). Grouped by title, the 19 resolve into three tracks.
| Track | Open reqs | What the job is | NY band range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Member of Technical Staff | 9 | Core product, systems, platform, and inference and post-training research | $150K to $350K |
| Forward Deployed Engineer | 4 | Customer-facing infrastructure work, ML and systems flavors | $180K to $250K |
| Security, management and other | 6 | Infrastructure security, detection and response, two engineering managers, customer engineering, one research intern | $150K to $330K |
Forward Deployed is not the consolation track. It is a different job with a tighter and more legible band, and for an engineer who would rather own a customer's problem end to end than own a subsystem, it is the better one. It is also the smaller pile. Four reqs attract nothing like the volume that nine reqs with a $350K ceiling attract.
What the interviews screen for is consistent across both: Python fluency, Rust for infrastructure roles, container runtime internals including namespaces, cgroups and containerd, GPU orchestration, distributed systems and storage (Source: techinterview.org). That is a third-party guide describing Modal, not Modal describing itself.
The hot take: pick one track and apply to one req. Applying to both an MTS and an FDE posting tells a recruiter you have not decided what you are, and the person who has not decided gets sorted into whichever pipeline is emptier that week.
The loop, and the number nobody can source
The same guide describes a 30-minute recruiter screen, a 60-minute technical phone screen built on one medium-hard systems problem, a 4 to 8 hour take-home for senior and staff candidates, and a virtual onsite of four to five rounds covering coding, system design, an infrastructure deep dive and a behavioral round. It rates the process 8 out of 10 for difficulty (Source: techinterview.org).
Here is what we will not tell you: how long it takes end to end. Sources conflict and none of them is verifiable. One job-tracking site lists three rounds and no total. The guide above implies several weeks. A search snippet asserts an 11-day average with no page behind it. Glassdoor's Modal interview page returns a 403 to anyone trying to check. Any specific day count you read for this company, ours included, is not sourced, so we are not giving you one. Ask the recruiter on the screen and get it in writing.
Modal also publishes no policy on using AI tools during its interviews. There is no how-we-hire post on its site and none of its reqs address it. Prep content asserts that Modal expects candidates to have read its engineering writing, but that is the prep site talking. Ask.
What you can verify from outside, and what you cannot
Modal's board is honest about its own size, which is checkable and is not what we expected to find. Nineteen engineering postings resolve to 15 distinct titles. Every one of the four repeated titles is the same role posted once in New York and once in Stockholm, and all 15 New York reqs carry distinct titles (Source: Modal Ashby posting API). Modal does not spray one requisition across ten cities to make its board look bigger, which is common enough that its absence is worth naming.
The corporate picture is equally clean. SEC EDGAR lists Modal Labs, Inc. under CIK 0002088132 with exactly two filings in its history, both Form D, both filed in October 2025, no ticker and no exchange. A full-text search for S-1 filings returns zero. An EDGAR company search for "Modal" returns nine entities, and the other eight are unrelated businesses rather than special-purpose vehicles holding Modal shares (Source: SEC EDGAR). Modal is private, and unlike several comparable AI companies, nobody has built a secondary-share cottage industry around its name.
What you cannot verify is whether any given req is live. The oldest open engineering posting, Member of Technical Staff Systems in New York, went up in October 2024 and is still on the board 22 months later. Only 4 of the 19 were posted in the last 90 days (Source: Modal Ashby posting API). That is not proof of a ghost job and we are not going to claim it is. A hard systems req at a company this small can stay genuinely open for two years because the bar has not been cleared. It can also be a page nobody has taken down. From outside the building those two look identical, and that ambiguity is the actual defect in applying cold.
One job-tracking service will sell you the observation that 53% of Modal's new postings go live on a Wednesday (Source: Scoutify). Knowing the weekday a req appears is not an advantage. It is a substitute for one.
Half of this search result is about vibration testing
Three of the top eleven results for "modal engineering jobs apply" have nothing to do with this company. Indeed returns 28 modal analysis engineer jobs, ZipRecruiter returns 314 at $24 to $105 an hour, and SimplyHired returns 507 (Source: ZipRecruiter). Those are structural dynamics and frequency response roles in mechanical engineering.
The search layer between a candidate and a company worth $4.65 billion cannot reliably tell which company the candidate meant. From where we sit, running matches against real reqs every day, keyword-shaped job discovery fails in both directions at once: it surfaces the wrong employer here, and it buries the right req somewhere a candidate never types.
Who should actually apply, and how
| If you are | Ruling | Because |
|---|---|---|
| A systems or infra engineer already in New York | Apply directly, this week | 15 distinct NY reqs with published bands, and you already clear the only hard filter on this board |
| A Bay Area engineer who will not relocate | Do not apply | Zero engineering reqs in San Francisco, none remote. A 4 to 8 hour take-home for a job you would decline is a weekend you do not get back |
| A Bay Area engineer open to moving | Apply, but settle relocation before the take-home | The onsite requirement is the deal, not a detail to negotiate at offer stage |
| Strong at customer-facing infrastructure work | Target Forward Deployed, not MTS | Four reqs, a tighter $180K to $250K band, and a fraction of the applicant volume aimed at the nine MTS reqs |
| Senior, and the band spread is your whole question | Get represented before the first call | A $200K spread is settled in conversation, and an anonymous application anchors at the bottom of it |
| In Stockholm | Apply directly. We cannot help | Standout is US only |
The mechanics are simple. Go to Modal's own board rather than any aggregator, because the aggregators are working from the same empty page a crawler sees and none of their counts is right. Read the band on the req itself. Pick one track. If you are US-based and not in New York, answer the relocation question first, not last.
Modal is exactly the profile of company we represent candidates into: US tech, this stage, hiring senior people into roles where the level is negotiable. The argument for arriving with an advocate is not a general one here, it is the specific one from earlier in this article. When a company posts a $200K band on a single title, it has told you the number is decided in a room. Being introduced by someone who has already spoken to the hiring manager changes who is in that room. Applying cold does not.
FAQ
How do you apply for engineering jobs at Modal?
Through Modal's Ashby board, reachable from modal.com/company. There are 31 open roles, 19 of them engineering, and the aggregators listing this company all quote different totals because the board is client-side rendered and returns an empty page to crawlers.
How much do Modal engineers get paid?
Posted New York base bands run from $150K to $350K depending on the req, with Systems Engineering Manager at $275K to $330K and Customer Engineer at the bottom at $150K to $220K. Most reqs also offer equity. Levels.fyi has no salary data for Modal at all, so the posted bands are the only real numbers available.
Where are Modal's engineering jobs located?
New York and Stockholm. Fifteen of 19 engineering reqs are New York, four are Stockholm, and none is San Francisco, despite Modal having an SF office where all five open roles are go-to-market or administrative. No engineering role is listed as remote.
What does Member of Technical Staff mean at Modal?
It is a flat title covering nine of the 19 engineering reqs, spanning systems, platform, ML performance, the Python SDK, research and product. It is not a level, and the posted bands prove it: three of those reqs run $150K to $350K on identical titles.
How hard is it to get hired at Modal?
A third-party interview guide rates the loop 8 out of 10, describing a recruiter screen, a 60-minute systems-oriented technical screen, a 4 to 8 hour take-home for senior candidates, and a four-to-five-round onsite. No verifiable end-to-end timeline exists for this company, so treat any specific day count you see online as unsourced.
