About the role
Skydio is the leading US drone company and the world leader in autonomous flight, the key technology for the future of drones and aerial mobility. The Skydio team combines deep expertise in artificial intelligence, best-in-class hardware and software product development, operational excellence, and customer obsession to empower a broader, more diverse audience of drone users, from utility inspectors to first responders, soldiers in battlefield scenarios, and beyond.
About the role
Skydio’s mission is to make the world safer and more efficient through autonomous drones. Public safety, critical infrastructure, and enterprise customers rely on Remote Flight Deck (RFD), Skydio’s browser-based piloting experience, to get eyes on the scene in seconds and coordinate a response. As a frontend intern on the RFD Platform team, you will help build that experience. RFD is the product the customer flies from, so the work starts in the interface and reaches into video, telemetry, and the services behind it when the feature calls for it.
The RFD Platform team builds the browser platform every remote pilot uses: live video, telemetry, the map, and flight controls. As an intern, you will ship production features with engineers, designers, and product managers, and you will have room to follow a problem past the frontend when that is where it leads.
How you’ll make an impact
Design and implement pilot-facing features that help operators make faster, safer decisions while flying.
Leverage curiosity, technical skill, and a collaborative mindset to help make the world more productive, creative, and safe with autonomous drones.
Collaborate across functions (product managers, designers, engineers, and support) to deliver high-quality, impactful features to customers.
Project examples
Build on the multi-cockpit view that allows pilots to open several drone pilots at once.
Ship a camera control like click-to-focus. Hold F, click a point in the live video, and lock focus and exposure on a moving target
Add a map layer like the flight-path breadcrumbs where pilots can turn on a live trail of where the drone has flown.
Render AR bounds around subject tracks from the vehicle, and allow users to interface to instruct the drone to follow a vehicle.
What makes you a good fit
Solid software engineering foundation and a commitment to writing clean, well-architected code.
Junior, senior, or MS-level student with meaningful project or internship experience developing modern web applications that connect to backend APIs and data systems.
Experience in modern web development (React, TypeScript, GraphQL, WebGL/Three.js).
Experience building and maintaining scalable APIs, services, and integrations for handling large datasets.
Bonus: familiarity with robotics software development concepts.
What Makes You a Good Fit:
Obtaining FAA Part 107 certification within the first 60 days of employment is strongly encouraged for all Skydio employees and required for certain positions.
Compensation: The hourly rate for this position is $47/hr for Undergrad, $53/hr for Graduate students, and $70/hr for PhD students*. About Skydio
Skydio is a drone manufacturer that uses artificial intelligence to create flying drones that are used by consumers, enterprises, and government customers.
It develops AI-powered drones to deliver the power and flying cameras without the complexity. The company's drones use an array of cameras and proprietary computer vision technology to recognize, avoid objects in real-time, and predict into the future to make intelligent decisions, enabling users by flying themselves through the most demanding tasks or keeping them safe from obstacles when they want to take control. The company's debut drone, the R1, could track a target and film them while avoiding obstacles without any human intervention required. Then the company released the Skydio 2 in 2019, its second drone, cutting off more than half the price while improving its autonomous tracking and video capabilities. Its flagship product, the X2, is equipped with seven cameras, 100x zoom, night vision, and promises to turn ordinary users into expert pilots thanks to its self-piloting abilities. It is backed by top investors and strategic partners including Andreessen Horowitz, Linse Capital, Next47, IVP, Playground, NVIDIA, and UP.Partners.
