Lead Attorney, Personal Injury (Hybrid, CA)

Los Angeles, San Francisco
Full-time

About the role

We’re hiring Lead Attorneys, Personal Injury (open to 3+ hires) with 3+ years of plaintiff-side PI experience (5+ is a plus) to build Atticus’s in-house injury practice.

Most lawyers who dream of building their own practice have to bet their savings to do it. They spend their nights worrying about marketing, payroll and whether the next good case will come in. At Atticus you get to be an entrepreneur without that risk. You’ll join an experienced group of peers whose core job is to help your practice grow, a flow of injured people who already trust Atticus, and plenty of capital to invest in representing clients and working up cases.

This is a fundamentally different approach to practicing law. You’ll build alongside software engineers and operators whose full-time job is to grow your practice. You’ll also get significant continuing education and training for you and your team. You’ll report to and partner with GM Peter Bailinson, and work closely with CEO and Managing Attorney Sam Byker.

What will you be doing?

  • Representing injury clients from intake through resolution, mostly motor vehicle and premises liability cases
  • Choosing which cases Atticus takes on, setting case strategy and making the calls that maximize each client’s recovery
  • Giving clients five-star service, including meeting them in person when needed
  • Working with company leaders on what kind of firm this becomes, from hiring the team to designing the brand
  • Building a better plaintiff’s firm from the ground up, with the same mission-first values Atticus brings to disability benefits

Key Requirements

  • 3+ years at a plaintiff’s PI firm, with motor vehicle and/or premises liability experience
  • Experience working up injury cases from intake through resolution
  • Based in California and licensed to practice law there
  • Law degree from an accredited, non-profit law school in the top ~50 of USNWR (e.g., Stanford, UCLA, USC, Berkeley, Irvine, Caruso)
  • A stable career history, a real commitment to helping people (not a showboat-y, high-ego style), and a close-to-spotless record of happy clients

Nice to have

  • 5+ years of PI experience and exposure to trials
  • Has supervised non-attorney staff or has a referral network of injury attorneys
  • Has thought about starting their own practice, or has startup experience

About Atticus

At any given time, 15 million Americans are experiencing a crisis that requires urgent help from our legal system or government. The right assistance could transform their lives. But today, most never get it. Atticus is a startup on a mission to change that. We're reinventing a broken space: the $100 billion market for legal services for individuals. We've taken a rare and exclusive commodity — access to expert legal advice and referrals — and made it free and available to everyone. To clients, we're a source of trusted guidance and an easy way to find and hire a great lawyer. To lawyers, we're a source of vetted clients and a way to build a practice they love while doing good. For now, most of our work involves helping disabled Americans qualify for government benefits. We also help victims of accidents, misconduct, and violence recover by getting compensation from insurance.
