Role Description: Averna Therapeutics is seeking a highly motivated Senior Bioinformatician to lead the development and scaling of bioinformatics pipelines, cloud-native computational infrastructure, and genomic analysis workflows supporting our therapeutic platform. This role sits at the intersection of computational biology, software engineering, and cloud infrastructure. The Sr. Bioinformatician will work closely with scientists, engineers, and cross-functional teams to build production-grade systems that enable high-throughput sequencing analysis, construct characterization, genomic integration analysis, and therapeutic design workflows. Responsibilities: Design, develop, and maintain scalable bioinformatics pipelines for NGS and long-read sequencing data analysis. Develop and optimize robust computational workflows supporting genomic characterization, construct design, insertion-site analysis, and related platform applications. Maintain cloud-native solutions for large-scale genomic data processing and workflow orchestration across research and platform teams. Implement best practices in software engineering, including CI/CD, automated testing, infrastructure-as-code, version control, and workflow monitoring. Maintain and improve secure, reliable, and cost-efficient cloud infrastructure supporting bioinformatics and data science operations. Collaborate cross-functionally with molecular biology, platform, data science, and software engineering teams to enable rapid experimental iteration and data-driven decision making. Troubleshoot pipeline and infrastructure issues in production environments and drive continuous improvements in performance, scalability, and usability. Contribute to technical architecture decisions, coding standards, and engineering best practices across the organization. Mentor junior team members and help foster a strong engineering and computational biology culture.
Qualifications: PhD+3 years or MSc+5 years of Industry experience in Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Genomics, or related field. Extensive experience developing and maintaining bioinformatics pipelines in production environments. Strong experience with NGS and long-read sequencing analysis workflows. Proficiency in workflow orchestration frameworks such as Nextflow, Snakemake, Cromwell/WDL, or similar systems. Strong programming skills in Python, Bash, and/or related scripting languages. Hands-on experience with cloud computing platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure. Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies including Docker and Kubernetes. Familiarity with CI/CD systems, automated testing frameworks, and infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or CloudFormation. Experience designing and maintaining scalable data infrastructure and backup strategies. Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, version control, and release management. Excellent problem-solving, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills. Comfortable operating in fast-paced startup settings with evolving priorities and high ownership expectations. Work Structure: Full time position. Based in Nes-Ziona, Israel, with a hybrid work arrangement available. General ability to flex work time/days to account for meetings across time zones.
