Principal Engineer Location: Toronto (preferred), Ottawa, California About Veem Veem is building the future of global payments infrastructure. We are looking for a transformative Principal Engineer who can help define the next generation of Veem’s technical architecture and AI-powered platform evolution. This is a highly strategic senior engineering leadership role for someone who thrives at the intersection of: Fintech infrastructure Crypto / blockchain / stablecoins AI transformation and automation Scalable distributed systems Engineering leadership and organizational influence You will partner closely with executive leadership and engineering teams to drive innovation, technical excellence, and long-term platform strategy. Role Overview As a Principal Engineer at Veem, you will serve as one of the company’s highest-level technical leaders. You will architect and drive mission-critical initiatives across payments infrastructure, AI-enabled systems, and emerging financial technologies. This role requires a hands-on technical leader who can: Influence architecture across the organization Lead transformational initiatives Mentor senior engineers and technical leads Drive adoption of AI-native engineering practices Help shape Veem’s future in stablecoins, blockchain, and intelligent financial systems You will also play a key role in managing and orchestrating AI agents and collaborating closely with the broader engineering organization to modernize systems, workflows, and developer productivity. What You’ll Do Technical Leadership & Architecture Define and drive long-term technical architecture strategy across core platform systems Lead large-scale distributed systems design for high-volume B2B fintech products Architect resilient, scalable, secure payment and financial infrastructure Establish engineering best practices for reliability, scalability, observability, and security Influence technical direction across multiple engineering teams AI Transformation & Intelligent Systems Lead AI transformation initiatives across engineering and operations Design systems leveraging AI agents, LLM workflows, and intelligent automation Drive adoption of AI-assisted developer tooling and operational automation Evaluate and implement emerging AI technologies to improve platform capabilities and productivity Partner with leadership to define Veem’s AI-native future Blockchain / Stablecoin Innovation Help shape Veem’s strategy around crypto, blockchain, and stablecoin infrastructure Architect secure integrations with digital asset ecosystems and modern payment rails Evaluate new fintech protocols, settlement mechanisms, and emerging technologies Partner cross-functionally on regulatory, compliance, and security considerations Engineering Excellence Mentor senior engineers and technical leaders Raise the engineering bar across architecture, code quality, and execution Lead technical reviews and strategic engineering decisions Drive modernization initiatives and reduce technical debt Serve as a trusted advisor to leadership on technical investments and risks Cross-Functional Influence Collaborate with Product, Data, Security, Compliance, and Executive leadership Translate business priorities into scalable technical solutions Influence roadmap planning and organizational technical strategy Help build a culture of innovation, ownership, and engineering excellence What We’re Looking For Required Experience 12–18 years of software engineering experience Proven experience operating at Staff+ / Principal Engineer level Strong experience building scalable distributed systems and cloud-native architectures Deep expertise in backend systems, APIs, microservices, and platform engineering Experience working in high-growth fintech or modern technology companies Strong hands-on coding and architecture capabilities Preferred Background Experience in B2B fintech environments Exposure to crypto, blockchain, stablecoins, or digital asset infrastructure Experience with AI/ML systems, LLM integrations, or AI-enabled platforms Background at modern technology companies such as Stripe, Coinbase, Block/Square, Brex, Mercury, Ramp, Robinhood, or other modern fintech and AI-native startups Leadership Qualities Exceptional systems-thinking and problem-solving skills Ability to influence without direct authority Strong communication and executive presence Passion for innovation and technical transformation Ability to operate effectively in fast-moving, ambiguous environments Technical Environment Cloud infrastructure (AWS/GCP/Azure) Distributed systems and event-driven architectures Modern backend stacks and APIs AI/LLM tooling and orchestration frameworks Blockchain/stablecoin/payment infrastructure Observability, reliability, and platform tooling
