Staff Backend Engineer

What we're looking for

We need someone with 8+ years of backend or infrastructure engineering experience (7+ for exceptional candidates) who has designed, built, and run production distributed systems at scale. You should be comfortable owning reliability for long-running, compute-heavy AI and media workflows in a fast-moving, zero-to-one environment. You should also have a track record of making systems measurably more reliable, observable, and scalable. You'll stand out if you already hold a Staff or Tech Lead title, have worked on audio, speech, or real-time streaming systems, or have a healthcare background (for example, Epic combined with Google or Meta experience).

What you'll do

• Design, build, and operate the backend systems behind Commure's Ambient AI products on mobile and web. This includes long-form audio ingestion, media processing, and real-time and asynchronous stream handling.
• Own orchestration for long-running, multi-stage inference workflows (transcription, diarization, LLMs, clinical extraction, summarization). This covers scheduling, queueing, retries, timeouts, dead-letter handling, idempotency, replay, and graceful degradation.
• Work with the mobile, product, AI, security, and clinical teams to turn new capabilities into production-ready workflows that stay reliable on poor or unstable networks and offline.
• Define and maintain SLOs for critical workflows, and build strong observability with structured logging, metrics, distributed tracing, dashboards, and alerting.
• Lead incident response and post-incident analysis from first detection to lasting fixes, removing recurring failure patterns through better abstractions, automation, testing, and architecture.
• Design and evolve APIs, data models, cloud infrastructure, and deployment systems, balancing reliability, latency, quality, and infrastructure cost. Mentor other engineers and set standards for distributed systems and operational readiness.
