We are looking for a Senior or Principal Mechanical Engineer with 5–10+ years of experience to own all structural engineering on Ampaire's hybrid-electric Cessna Caravan modification — the first hybrid-electric aircraft to be FAA certified. This is a rare, full-stack role at a capital-efficient startup on the verge of a historic market milestone: you won't be a narrow analyst on a massive team, you'll be the most senior mechanical engineer in the organization, driving design, analysis, and certification from the ground up. You'll report directly to the CTO and play a pivotal role in growing the structures team as the company scales. If you want to be part of the team that gets hybrid-electric aviation to market faster than anyone else, this is your seat.
What will you be doing?
Own structural design and analysis of aircraft modifications — including engine mount frames, firewall loads, front landing gear, battery pack mounting, and cowls — from concept through FAA certification
Perform and lead structural analysis using hand calculations and FEA, and author substantiation reports submitted to the FAA
Build CAD models and release engineering drawings in SolidWorks, and work directly with suppliers on quoting, procurement, and inspection of parts
Get hands-on with the aircraft — supporting prototype assembly, rework, and ground/flight testing alongside the broader team
Mentor a junior mechanical engineer and help identify future hires as the structures team grows
Ampaire is revolutionizing air travel with hybrid-electric propulsion, pioneering the fastest and most practical path to sustainable aviation. Founded in 2016 and headquartered at Long Beach Airport in California, Ampaire has led the industry in real-world hybrid-electric flight innovation, achieving historic milestones since the first flight of its Electric EEL testbed in 2019.
Ampaire's mission is to be a category leader in electrified aviation. Rather than waiting for next-generation battery or fuel cell technology, Ampaire takes a capital-efficient approach: developing hybrid-electric upgrades for existing, already-certified aircraft. Their flagship product — the Eco Caravan, a hybrid-electric repowering of the Cessna Caravan — is on track to become the first FAA-certified hybrid-electric aircraft ever, with over 30,000 miles of real-world flight already logged across Hawaii, Scotland, Canada, Alaska, and beyond.
The company's core technology, the AMP Drive hybrid-electric powertrain, slashes fuel consumption by 50–70% and carries none of the payload or range limitations of all-electric solutions. It also features a built-in safety case the FAA appreciates: in the event of a fault in the electric boost system, the aircraft reverts to conventional jet-fuel operation. This practical, certifiable approach gives Ampaire a clear path to market in the near term — with a $5B+ sales pipeline and a long-range roadmap that extends to clean-sheet energy-optimized aircraft.
Ampaire is a small, tightly-knit team of roughly 25 people operating at an exciting inflection point: fresh off a Series B fundraise and actively growing its technical staff to take the Eco Caravan all the way through FAA certification and into production. The culture is entrepreneurial, milestone-driven, and deeply collaborative — this is a place where engineers do meaningful, full-stack work and see their contributions directly shape the future of aviation.
