About the role
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer with 3+ years of experience to own and scale the core infrastructure powering PromptLayer's AI platform. PromptLayer is a fast-moving, seed-funded startup of 22 people in NYC building the horizontal AI layer used by everyone from indie hackers to Fortune 50 companies. We need someone who can walk in on day one, get up to speed on a Kubernetes-based Python/Postgres/Redis stack on GCP, and take command of critical backend systems — in 60 days. This is a ground-floor opportunity to grow with a hungry, humble team at the absolute forefront of AI infrastructure.
What will you be doing?
- Take ownership of core backend infrastructure — Postgres, OpenSearch/Elasticsearch, Redis, and Kubernetes on GCP — and tackle the hardest scaling challenges head-on.
- Architect and build backend systems that handle hundreds of requests per second, with a 10x growth target on the horizon.
- Drive critical backend product features end-to-end, from design through deployment, with minimal hand-holding.
- Solve complex data ingestion and database scaling problems, particularly around high-volume data handling and low-latency infrastructure.
- Collaborate closely with a small, senior engineering team to shape the technical direction of the platform.
