Be a part of how law becomes software

AI is changing how legal work gets done. We’re looking for a law student who wants to get inside an AI-native startup and see what that actually looks like.

Elayne is building an AI platform for estate settlement. When someone passes away, families are left to navigate an extraordinarily complicated system of courts, financial institutions, government agencies, legal requirements, and paperwork. Elayne is building the technology to make that process dramatically easier.

We’re backed by Y Combinator and Accel and are building at the intersection of AI, legal technology, and financial infrastructure.

As a Legal Product Fellow, you’ll work directly with our founding team to take complicated legal and administrative systems and figure out how technology can navigate them on behalf of a family.

This is not a traditional legal internship reviewing contracts and drafting memos, you’ll be helping to actually build the product.

What you’ll work on

A typical project might start with a question like:

What does a family actually need to do to successfully file a probate petition in New York, and how much of that work can elegant technology do for them?

The experience should feel simple to the family but there’s a lot that needs to align behind the scenes.

You might:

• Research court rules, statutes, forms, and agency requirements and map them into product logic
• Determine the minimum information we need to ask a family, and what Elayne can obtain instead through AI agents, document parsing, APIs, public records, and other data sources
• Figure out what can be inferred or cross-checked automatically and what needs to be verified by the family
• Identify edge cases where the product should ask another question, find another source, or bring in a human
• Work directly with product and engineering as your research becomes software

For example, instead of asking a family to understand a court form and manually assemble everything it requires, Elayne might parse a will and death certificate, identify the people and relationships involved, enrich missing information from external sources, apply the relevant court rules, predict which forms are needed, and ask the family only for three data points that are missing before they can move on to review.

Who we’re looking for

We’re looking for a 2L or 3L who is curious about where law and technology are going. Exceptional 1Ls are also encouraged to apply.

You might be a fit if you:

• Love researching difficult questions and getting to the actual answer
• Are unusually precise and detail-oriented
• Enjoy turning messy information into clear systems
• Are interested in AI, startups, legal tech, fintech, or product
• Want exposure to a technology company rather than a traditional legal environment
• Are comfortable distinguishing between what the law clearly establishes and what still needs to be verified

You do not need prior trusts and estates experience. Backgrounds in consulting, finance, engineering, product, research, law review, or other analytical work are a plus.

Location: NoMad, Manhattan, in person when possible, but we’ll work around your classes

Schedule: 20 hours/week

Compensation: $30–$40/hour
