About the role
We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer, Privacy with 7+ years of experience who has deep expertise in privacy, security, or compliance infrastructure. They should be comfortable operating in a fast-paced, high-ownership startup environment building systems that protect PHI across millions of patient encounters. They'll need exceptional communication skills, a genuine mission-driven interest in healthcare, and a track record of owning cross-cutting technical initiatives end-to-end. Bonus points if they've worked in regulated industries (finance, banking) at a high-growth company.
Responsibilities
- Own the full privacy infrastructure stack — access control, audit logging, data retention, and de-identification pipelines — that enables Ambience to sell and expand into the most security-conscious health systems in the country
- Design and implement granular RBAC and least-privilege enforcement across the application, building workflows that document why specific PHI is being accessed
- Build comprehensive audit logging infrastructure integrated with SIEM that withstands real compliance investigations — not checkbox compliance
- Architect data retention and de-identification pipelines supporting per-org configurations across all PHI artifact types (EHR chart data, transcripts, audio recordings, logs)
- Scale intelligent de-identification pipelines across multi-modal clinical data while preserving utility for downstream use cases
- Influence technical direction across teams as a staff-level IC, mentoring engineers and driving clarity of thought on privacy and security architecture decisions
- Work within a pod of 3-6 engineers alongside clinical AI researchers (full-time doctors) and product managers to ship privacy-critical features
