Manufacturing Engineering Manager

San Mateo, United States
Full-time

About the role

We are looking for a Manufacturing Engineering Manager with 7+ years of manufacturing or NPI engineering experience to own the move of Skild AI's electromechanical robotics hardware from prototype into repeatable production. You will take over from the previous lead, who set up the first assembly line, and become the main point of contact for our manufacturing plant as it grows. We need a hands-on lead who still does a lot of the work directly and can build both the manufacturing line and the operations team behind it. Design changes and processes are still being written, so this role suits someone who wants to build rather than maintain a mature, stable line. You'll inherit active builds and a small team, and you'll scale hardware that runs on one of the most ambitious AI platforms in robotics.

What will you be doing?

  • Leading the assembly technicians and manufacturing engineers directly (currently 4 technicians, working with our supply chain manager), and growing the manufacturing operations team
  • Owning build execution on the builds already in progress: sequencing around part availability, setting daily floor priorities and escalating when a build stalls
  • Cutting build labor from the current 70–80 hours per unit through process and cycle-time improvements, fixturing and tooling across high-mix, high-complexity assembly
  • Running new product introduction (NPI): taking new hardware platforms from engineering release through pilot builds into producible builds, and giving design specific, actionable manufacturability feedback
  • Owning work instructions, build documentation and manufacturing systems (PLM/BOM), and keeping them accurate and under revision control as designs change

About Skild AI

Skild AI is building the world's first general-purpose robotic intelligence — an omnibodied AI brain that can be deployed into any hardware platform, from humanoid robots to warehouse automation systems to quadrupeds. Founded in 2022 and headquartered in San Mateo, California, Skild AI takes a fundamentally different approach to the robotics race: rather than building a single robot, they've created a platform-agnostic foundation model that makes any robot a dramatically better version of itself.

The company operates at the intersection of massive-scale machine learning and physical robotics, believing that data-driven AI is the key to unlocking robust robotic intelligence that adapts to unseen scenarios without failing. Their customers include major technology companies like Amazon and NVIDIA, who integrate Skild's brain into their own hardware platforms.

With over $1.8 billion in funding from world-class investors including SoftBank, Sequoia Capital, NVIDIA, Bezos Expeditions, and Samsung, Skild AI has grown from a 12-person team to nearly 200 employees in under two years. The company also pursues strategic acquisitions — such as Fetch Robotics — to expand their hardware footprint and demonstrate the transformative power of their AI when deployed into existing platforms.

Skild AI fosters a fast-paced, high-ownership startup culture where team members work directly with founders and have outsized impact. The founding team emerged from CMU's robotics ecosystem, and the company values demonstrated ability and attitude over pedigree, welcoming individuals from new graduates to domain experts who are passionate about exploring uncharted territory in embodied AI.
