About the role
We are looking for a Product Engineer with 3-6 years of experience to join our small engineering team, fresh off a $45M Series B. You'll sit with the business, learn how captive insurance actually works, and build the AI-powered platform tools that let our team automate their own workflows. You're a strong engineer who would rather ship features people use than design architecture on its own.
What will you be doing?
- Write code about 60% of the time, owning features end to end across the stack: React and TypeScript front ends, plus Node and Python services.
- Spend about 20% of your time sitting with business users. You'll break down manual workflows like invoicing, PDF handling, and approvals, then build the platform pieces that automate them (email ingestion, document generation, Harvest and DocuSign APIs).
- Build AI-powered production features, using LLMs and agents as a core part of the platform rather than an add-on.
- Spend the remaining 20% on product planning and roadmapping with product managers and the business.
- Use AI tools in your daily development work, and know when to rely on them and when to write code by hand (for example, permissions and domain modeling).
Key Requirements
- 3-6 years of full-time, post-graduation experience as a software engineer at a company known for a high engineering bar (Google, Ramp, Bloomberg, Citadel, Coinbase and similar). Internships don't count.
- Strong full-stack product engineering background. Experience limited to infrastructure or CI/CD won't be enough.
- Shipped AI features to production (LLMs or agentic workflows), with clear opinions on how to use AI in development.
- Experience working directly with users or the business to understand their workflows. No insurance background needed.
- CS degree from a strong program, steady time at each employer, and a desire to ship features rather than act as a founding engineer or CTO.
About Luzern Risk
Luzern Risk is a technology-first captive insurance manager. Its mission is to make sophisticated insurance risk management available to far more businesses. It combines insurance expertise with an end-to-end digital platform that helps businesses plan, form and manage their own captive insurance programs. In short, Luzern gives businesses the power to own their insurance.
A captive is an insurance company that a business owns outright. Instead of paying a traditional carrier and handing over the underwriting profit, the business insures its own risk. It keeps that underwriting profit, gets access to wholesale reinsurance markets at better prices, and benefits from the tax treatment of insurance expenses. Until now, captives have mostly been used by the Fortune 1000. Legacy captive managers work like consultancies: their programs are slow to set up, custom-built and expensive. Luzern uses technology to lower the cost of forming and running captives so it can serve the "Fortune 100,000."
Luzern handles the full lifecycle of a captive: structuring, licensing, governance, accounting, claims and regulatory compliance. All of it runs through an AI-native platform where software agents run the workflows and licensed experts direct, approve and advise. The model is working:
- 30+ captives under management
- $200M+ in premium
- Licenses in 11 U.S. domiciles plus the Cayman Islands
- Zero client turnover
- Millions in ARR and roughly 700% growth this year
Luzern recently closed a $45M Series B led by Insight Partners to scale the platform. Legacy captive managers run on services margins of about 20–40%. Luzern's software lets it run the same work at SaaS-like margins of around 80%. Captive management is the starting point. The long-term goal is for the platform to become infrastructure for how companies finance risk.
