About the Role
The Data Infrastructure team designs, deploys, and operates the large-scale open-source data systems that underpin Backblaze's products. We run some of the largest clusters of their kind globally, and at that scale the cost of a poorly designed or misconfigured system is measured in millions of dollars of hardware and direct impact on product reliability.
This role sits at the intersection of infrastructure engineering and application design. The work is not purely operational – it requires a deep understanding of how each system behaves under load, how application usage patterns interact with infrastructure decisions, and how to configure and evolve these systems to remain performant and cost-effective as the business grows. Engineers in this team work closely with application teams to ensure that both the infrastructure and the applications built on top of it are designed to perform well together.
The breadth of systems in scope means the nature of problems varies considerably. Engineers in this team are expected to be as comfortable reasoning about a new system being deployed for the first time as they are optimising one that has been in production for years.
What You'll Do
Backblaze is the object storage leader in the open cloud movement, fuelling customer success with cloud storage built purposefully to unlock budgets, unburden administrators, and unleash innovators. Together with our partners, we are helping customers break free from the restrictive, overpriced legacy solutions that hold them back and move forward with the full power of the open cloud in their hands.
Founded in 2007, we scaled the business with less than $3 million in outside funding until 2021, when we completed a traditional IPO on the Nasdaq stock exchange. Today, Backblaze generates over $100M in revenue and is the leading specialised storage cloud – managing over three billion gigabytes of data for 500,000+ customers in 175+ countries, including businesses, developers, IT professionals, and individuals. But while there is a lot to celebrate in our past, there is almost as much opportunity ahead of us.
We offer high-performance, secure cloud object storage that customers use to build AI workflows, develop applications, manage media, secure backups, protect from ransomware, and more. Our core products are B2 Cloud Storage – an S3-compatible object storage platform with predictable pricing, no minimum file size or storage duration fees, and free egress – and Computer Backup, which provides automatic continuous backup for Mac and PC endpoints across hybrid and remote work environments.
