About the role
Provide technical leadership for an area of Excel Agent, contributing to technical direction and driving delivery from design through production. Design solutions spanning client and service components that enable the agent to understand workbook context and user intent, complete multi-step tasks, and validate results. Evaluate performance, scalability, resiliency, disaster recovery, security, and cost considerations when designing and reviewing technical solutions. Establish and improve quality standards for agentic experiences, including evaluation methods, telemetry, monitoring, and guardrails that support reliable and responsible behavior at scale. Define and execute testing strategies for assigned areas, including unit, integration, regression, and security testing, and use automation to improve coverage and prevent regressions. Participate in and lead incident response as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI), including mitigation, post-incident reviews, root-cause analysis, and implementation of reliability improvements. Apply disciplined AI-assisted development practices by reviewing, validating, and taking responsibility for AI-generated code, designs, tests, and other engineering artifacts. Support other engineers in applying similar practices. Collaborate with product, design, applied science, engineering, security, and privacy partners to translate customer needs and AI capabilities into technical plans that meet applicable security, privacy, responsible AI, and accessibility
requirements. Break down complex or ambiguous technical work into well-defined projects and engineering tasks and deliver secure, tested, and maintainable code across client and service components. Support deployment automation and safe rollout practices using mechanisms such as feature flags, success and guardrail metrics, monitoring, and rollback plans. Partner with other teams on shared components, interfaces, and engineering patterns and contribute improvements to shared technologies where appropriate. Mentor engineers through technical discussions, design reviews, and code reviews, and contribute to engineering standards for code quality, reliability, maintainability, and observability Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience. Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience. Effective communication skills and experience collaborating across cross-functional teams. Experience using AI or LLM-based technologies in software development, such as AI-assisted coding, code-generation workflows, automated test generation, AI-assisted debugging, or AI-supported code review. Experience developing agentic or AI-powered systems involving capabilities such as tool use/function calling, workflow orchestration, memory, planning, evaluation loops, or multi-agent patterns. Experience designing or developing high-scale service architectures, including distributed systems, microservices, event-driven systems, caching, queues or streams, and observability for production services. Experience with applied science or data-driven product development, such as experimentation, model evaluation, ranking or recommendation systems, or usage analysis. Experience leading technical designs across multiple components or teams, mentoring engineers, and driving cross-team technical alignment. Experience improving the quality and reliability of AI features or production services, including defining evaluation or quality standards, supporting incident response, and developing telemetry, monitoring, or guardrails.
