About the role
We are looking for an Engineering Manager with 8+ years of experience to own the health, output, and trajectory of an engineering pod (~6–8 engineers) at Loancrate, an AI-native Loan Origination System transforming the mortgage industry. You'll be a hands-on leader who still codes (10–20% of your time), manages people with care and directness, and partners closely with Product and Technical Leads to deliver high-impact work in a complex, high-stakes domain.
What will you be doing?
- Managing a pod of ~6–8 engineers — running 1:1s, giving continuous feedback, handling hiring/firing, PIPs, and career growth
- Owning your pod's execution cadence: planning, retros, delivery health, and surfacing risk early
- Continuing to code ~10–20% of your time — shipping 1–2 PRs per week to stay close to the engineering experience
- Partnering with Product Managers and Technical Leads on prioritization, architecture decisions, and cross-functional alignment
- Onboarding new engineers effectively and keeping documentation and ownership boundaries sharp
Key Requirements
- Has actually managed (not just led) 5+ engineers with real people management experience — hiring, firing, PIPs, performance reviews
- Hands-on TypeScript experience — must be able to pass a live coding interview in TypeScript (no language substitutes)
- Progressive engineering career trajectory (SWE → Senior → Staff/Management) — not just a title jump at a tiny startup
- AI-forward mindset — comfortable using AI tools in engineering workflows and expects their team to as well
- Startup or small-company experience preferred — candidates who have only managed at large corporations (1000+ employees) are a concern
