We're a Series A startup backed by top-tier investors, growing fast, and building a world-class team. With over 250 customers already using our tax services, we're now ready to bring this function fully in-house and build it from the ground up.
The Role
We're hiring our first dedicated tax leader to own tax strategy and compliance as we scale. This is an opportunity to build a tax function from scratch at a high-growth fintech startup.
You'll establish processes, manage compliance across federal and state jurisdictions, and serve as a trusted advisor to our CEO and leadership team. As we grow, you'll build a team of 3-6 tax professionals over the next year.
What You'll Do
Own Tax Compliance & Strategy
- Manage federal and multi-state corporate income tax compliance
- Oversee SALT nexus, franchise taxes, and annual filings as we expand
- Design and administer equity tax strategy (ISOs, NSOs, 83(b) elections)
- Maximize and defend R&D tax credits in partnership with Engineering
- Evaluate sales and use tax exposure and implement compliance workflows
Build Scalable Systems
- Establish tax processes, calendars, and workflows from scratch
- Build internal controls and documentation for audit readiness
- Select and manage external advisors where needed
- Set up the tech stack to support tax operations
Advise Leadership
- Proactively flag tax implications of hiring, expansion, and product decisions
- Support fundraising and investor diligence
- Translate complex tax positions into clear business guidance for the CEO and leadership team
You Have
- Bachelors Degree in Finance, Accounting, or relevant degree
- 8-15+ years of progressive tax experience with a blend of public accounting and in-house roles
- CPA or Enrolled Agent license (required)
- Strong federal and state tax expertise in tech, SaaS, or venture-backed companies
- Builder mentality- you're hands-on and comfortable being the first tax hire
- Sound judgment in ambiguous environments; can make decisions with incomplete information
- Clear communicator who can explain complex tax concepts to non-technical executives
Nice-to-haves: Startup experience across multiple funding stages, team building experience, international tax exposure, R&D credit expertise
What Success Looks Like
Within 12-18 months, you will have:
- Delivered clean, on-time tax filings across all jurisdictions
- Established a clear nexus and expansion strategy
- Optimized R&D credit utilization
- Built scalable tax processes and systems
- Hired and developed 1-3 team members
