Turion Space is seeking an experienced Senior Platform Engineer to join our platform engineering team. This role requires advanced expertise in CI/CD practices, cloud services (particularly AWS), containerization, and infrastructure as code. While our current infrastructure primarily uses AWS, we're building our platform and products with infrastructure agnosticism in mind - whether cloud or on-premises. The ideal candidate will contribute to the design and implementation of our internal developer platforms while assisting with our current infrastructure needs.
If you are passionate about space technology, thrive in building scalable platform solutions, and have the skills to significantly contribute to our platform engineering initiatives, we want to hear from you.
Key Responsibilities
Platform Development:
Design and drive implementation of internal developer platforms and self-service tools
Develop abstraction layers that enable infrastructure portability across different deployment targets
Build and optimize reusable infrastructure components and templates, ensuring cross-environment portability
Design and implement platform APIs and tools that abstract away infrastructure-specific details
Establish cloud-agnostic observability and monitoring solutions
Define and implement standardized deployment patterns and workflows
Architect and enhance our container orchestration platform improvements
Develop comprehensive platform documentation and training materials
Guide development teams in their transition to self-service capabilities
Immediate Impact:
Help maintain and optimize existing AWS infrastructure and deployment pipelines
Support immediate production issues and deployments
Assist in implementing security best practices across our platform and infrastructure
Contribute to disaster recovery and business continuity plans
Implement and manage advanced secrets management solutions
Participate in on-call rotations and assist with incident response efforts
Support teams with their current CI/CD and deployment needs
Help teams design cloud-agnostic solutions while working within current AWS constraints
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Must be able to obtain and maintain a Personnel Security Clearance (PCL)
8+ years of experience in software development, DevOps, or platform engineering
Proven track record of implementing large-scale platforms and infrastructure
Expert-level knowledge of CI/CD concepts and extensive experience with industry-standard tools
Deep expertise with AWS services and architectures, particularly around containerization and orchestration
Advanced proficiency in infrastructure as code tools, especially AWS CDK
Expert-level knowledge in at least one programming language (e.g., Python, Go, TypeScript)
Extensive experience with containerization technologies and orchestration platforms
Comprehensive understanding of networking, security, and infrastructure concepts
Experience with both cloud and on-premises infrastructure management
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to drive technical initiatives
Outstanding communication skills
Physical ability to occasionally work with server equipment (lifting up to 50 pounds, rack mounting)
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
Experience building and maintaining large-scale internal developer platforms
Experience in platform engineering roles within aerospace or high-tech industries
Advanced skills in Python and Go, with a history of significant contributions to open-source projects
Experience implementing GitOps practices in large-scale environments
Deep knowledge of enterprise Linux distributions and their management at scale
Experience designing and implementing advanced monitoring and observability solutions
Track record of successful problem-solving in high-pressure, mission-critical environments
Knowledge of multiple cloud providers and their architectural differences
Experience with hybrid infrastructure solutions and implementation
Familiarity with compliance standards relevant to the aerospace industry (e.g., NIST, ITAR)
Experience with financial aspects of platform and infrastructure management
Knowledge of machine learning operations (MLOps) and experience integrating ML workflows into CI/CD pipelines

About Turion Space
Turion Space is building spacecraft to move things around in space and image space objects when they’re not, and focused on developing the dual-use technology required to ensure a sustainable future in space. They aim to build a strong foundation selling space domain awareness imagery data while advancing their technology towards an affordable solution for orbital debris removal and eventually asteroid mining. The founding team originates from SpaceX, and after going through the Y-combinator accelerator in summer 2021 went on to raise a $6.2M seed round and is launching their first DROID satellite in early 2023.
