About the role
Who are we looking for?
We are looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to own the entire backend stack at Throne Science. This is the most impactful engineering hire the company will make this year – you'll build and scale systems from 50 GB/day of ingest today toward 2 TB/day as the product grows. The role reports directly to the CTO and has a clear path to building and leading the backend team over the next few years.
What will you be doing?
- Own and evolve the entire backend architecture – Go services, gRPC/REST APIs, async processing pipelines, and infrastructure on AWS (ECS/Fargate, S3, SQS, Terraform)
- Scale the data ingest and ML processing pipeline from 50 GB/day to 2 TB/day while keeping costs efficient (~$6/user/month target)
- Make principled architecture decisions independently – database selection, service boundaries, queue design, and cost/performance trade-offs
- Drive reliability and observability across the platform, ensuring stable infrastructure as the user base grows from 300 DAU to tens of thousands
- Help hire and eventually lead the backend engineering team as the company scales post-Series A
