Lab Technician (Evening Shift)

South San Francisco, United States
Full-time

About the role

We are looking for a Lab Technician (Evening Shift) with 2+ years of commercial, high-throughput lab experience to help run our South San Francisco sequencing lab, where we process 1,000 to 3,500 samples every night. We need a fast, sharp, independent troubleshooter who can start contributing right away. This person should understand the science behind each step, so they can keep samples moving and get results to customers on time, including Nobel laureates, Fortune 100 pharma and 70,000+ scientists.

What will you be doing?

  • Receive courier-delivered samples and log them in our in-house LIMS. Then move them into 96-well plates.
  • Run library prep on liquid handling robots, such as Opentrons, and load the prepared libraries onto sequencers.
  • Monitor sequencing runs and do QC. Investigate failed samples and re-prep them as needed so results go out on time.
  • Fix instrument and protocol problems on your own in real time. Nobody is waiting until the next shift to fix them.
  • Keep the lab stocked with consumables and reagents. Suggest protocol improvements in a lab that sits next to R&D, product and engineering.

Key Requirements

  • 2+ years of hands-on DNA extraction, purification, PCR and/or sequencing work in a commercial or production lab after your degree. Academic or research lab experience does not count.
  • Experience handling high sample volumes in a fast-paced setting. Experience with automation or liquid handlers (Opentrons, Tecan, Hamilton) is a strong plus.
  • A solid understanding of why each lab step works, so you can troubleshoot on your own late at night.
  • Ability to work on-site Monday to Friday, 4:00pm to 12:00am PST, in South San Francisco.
  • A bachelor's or master's degree, ideally in a biology-related field. You must also be authorized to work in the U.S. without sponsorship.
