Staff Software Engineer

What we're looking for

We need someone with 7+ years of experience in full-stack software engineering who already holds a Staff, Principal, or Lead title (or is a strong engineering manager moving back to an individual contributor role) and has led complex technical work across several teams at a top tech company or fast-growing startup. You should be comfortable spending about half your time on architecture and system design and half on hands-on coding in Python and TypeScript. You should also have a track record of shipping efficient, maintainable systems that span multiple teams. Bonus points if you have platform, infrastructure, or data platform experience, work with AI agents, or have a mix of big tech and startup backgrounds.

What you'll do

• Act as technical leader across several engineering teams, splitting your time roughly 50/50 (up to 60/40) between architecture and system design and hands-on coding
• Own complex projects that involve many people, from concept to production: define the scope and timelines, and be fully accountable for the results
• Work as a peer to engineering managers as part of engineering leadership, setting technical direction for Assort's most important projects and products
• Build backend-leaning, production-grade software in Python, TypeScript, React, and Next.js that powers Assort's AI agent platform for patients and meets HIPAA and healthcare security standards at scale
• Lead platform and infrastructure work from design to delivery, strengthening the core systems behind voice AI, complex data integrations, and AI agents
• Mentor and coach engineers across teams, set the bar for engineering quality, and raise the skill level of the whole organization
